Wirrabara

History of the Church of St Margaret at Wirrabara.

The little congregation of St Margaret's, Wirrabara, worships in a building that has had  a variety of uses since it was built in 1884 as the first Institute for the town.  When the new Institute was built in 1912 the old building became class rooms for the junior students of the over-crowded school, till the new school opened in 1921. A local store-keeper then added a store front and opened a furniture store.  After this closed  the building was used at times for small social events, including card evenings which the people of St Margaret's held  to help raise  funds to build a new church, not thinking that it would eventually become the new St Margaret's. When the building came on the market in 1964 they decided to buy it and convert it into as church. Some of the furnishings came from the old church and after many hours of scrubbing, sanding and recoating with clear finish took on a new look.  A new altar and reredos added to the feeling of light and space.
The small, committed congregation gathers weekly for worship and on the third Sunday of the month the worship is a more informal morning prayer service.  Pews, in the back corner near the organ, are arranged in a horseshoe so that  every one can hear and take part in the intercessions. This arrangement also makes it easy to have discussions instead of a more formal sermon.
Choruses sung to a guitar give variety to the worship, with more traditional hymns sung to the organ.
