I
can think of no better place to be during the 2010 pre election hype
than on an eco- spirituality escape to the Flinders Ranges. The five
days spent at Gum Creek Station and nearby Brachina Gorge from July 19
to July 24th, were reflective and spiritually rewarding
under the guidance of Bishop Garry. The effervescent
Terry Krieg , expounded
his tremendous knowledge of the Flinders Ranges, not only by talk, chalk
and by observation, but also in poetry.
Billy
tea, and picnic lunches in the gorges were delightful daily events as we
explored this ancient land of folded and faulted sediments of the
Adelaide Geosyncline formed during the Cambrian period some 540 million
years ago. Stunning ridgetops of quartzites tower over the softer shales
and slates which form the valleys and low hills, provided an endless
fascination for everyone.
The
yellow footed rock wallabies chose to ignore us, much preferring their
afternoon snacks of lush grass and the wedge tailed eagles and kites
soared above us in perfect harmony with their world. Father emu in
charge of his 13 chicks seemed quite unruffled about his duty of care
even though he was invaded by onlookers with cameras.
One
cannot be but in awe as you walk the oldest mountain ranges on earth
where significant geological and fossil sites abound. These five days
were inspiring, allowing time to ‘get grounded’ amidst the rush of
our busy daily lives.
Finally,
the wonderful gourmet meals produced by Geraldine Krieg rate a special
mention. We were in awe. |
